Certified Quality Architecture of the Wet Painting Process

Pretreatment

Only proper and carefully performed surface preparation guarantees a durable and attractive final result. Depending on the material and the project’s requirements, we perform mechanical or chemical surface preparation, such as pressure washing (sandblasting/shot blasting) or chemical washing, in accordance with the industry’s strictest standards to ensure perfect paint adhesion to steel, zinc, and aluminum surfaces.

Painting

The painting is performed using precise industrial spray coating, which ensures an even and optimal film thickness even on the most demanding metal surfaces. If the part’s geometry is exceptionally complex, we ensure that paint reaches tight crevices and weld seams by hand to guarantee the best possible corrosion protection.

Multilayer Systems

We perform demanding surface treatments, applying up to five coats of paint if necessary (e.g., primer, intermediate, and topcoats). We systematically apply different types of coatings (such as epoxies and polyurethanes) to achieve maximum protection against mechanical wear, chemicals, and moisture.

Quality Assurance

Quality control is an integral part of every expert’s daily work on the production line. In addition to multi-stage process verification, you have access to the expertise of our in-house specialist, who holds the highest personal FROSIO Level III certification. This ensures that even the most demanding specialized inspections and quality documentation in accordance with international standards are carried out promptly and impartially right on site. At Löfs, quality is not a random inspection item, but a reliable system.

Corrosion Classes

Certified Corrosion Protection for the Most Demanding Environments

When deciding on a surface treatment method for a product, it is critical to assess where and in what kinds of environments the product will be used. Wet painting is the most suitable surface treatment method when the painted surface is intended to withstand extreme conditions, such as large temperature fluctuations, soil stress, or seawater.

Löfs carries out demanding industrial painting projects using certified coating systems that comply with international corrosion classifications C1–CX (climatic exposure) and the NORSOK M-501 standard (water and underground exposure).

Achieving the highest standards requires exceptionally rigorous quality assurance. At Löfs, you have access to top-tier expertise that meets the highest FROSIO Level III (Level 3) certification standards, ensuring that the coating is fully compliant with standards and highly durable.

C1 – Very low risk of corrosion

ENVIRONMENT

Heated indoor spaces with dry air and low levels of pollutants (e.g., offices, stores, hotels). Not for outdoor use.

Löfs execution

A cost-effective single-coat painting process that focuses on achieving a clean, even, and visually flawless finish.

C2 – Low risk of corrosion

ENVIRONMENT

Outdoors: a small amount of pollutants (rural environment). Indoors: unheated spaces where temperature and humidity vary (e.g., warehouses and sports halls).

IMPLEMENTATION OF LÖFS

A single-coat, high-quality finish that protects items from weather fluctuations in indoor and sheltered outdoor areas.

C3 – Moderate corrosion risk

ENVIRONMENT

Outdoor urban and industrial air. Indoors, moderate humidity and some pollutants (e.g., breweries, dairies, laundries).

Löfs execution

Careful pretreatment and high-quality surface treatment for industrial machinery and equipment components.

C4 – High corrosion risk

ENVIRONMENT

Outdoor industrial and coastal areas with significant levels of pollutants or moderate salt concentrations. Indoor areas with high humidity (e.g., chemical plants, shipyards).

Löfs execution

Coating of demanding applications, such as the body parts of heavy-duty vehicles and trailers, using a multi-layer system.

C5 – Very high risk of corrosion

ENVIRONMENT

Industrial and offshore areas characterized by a harsh climate, high humidity, and high salt content.

Löfs execution

Pre-treatment meeting the highest standards and customized, certified surface treatment solutions for extremely harsh climatic conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions About Wet Painting

We serve manufacturers in the metal, machinery, and equipment industries by offering industrial-scale capacity and uncompromising quality. Below, you’ll find answers to the most common questions related to wet painting and Löfs’ services.

Wet painting is a traditional and highly versatile industrial surface treatment method in which liquid paint is applied to the surface of a workpiece, primarily by high-pressure spraying. The paint can dry either at room temperature or be dried in a controlled manner in facilities designed for that purpose. The key advantage of wet painting is its flexibility: it does not require high curing temperatures and allows for extremely thick and durable protective coatings through multi-layer application.

Wet painting is suitable for virtually all materials used in industry, such as steel, aluminum, plastic, and fiberglass. It is the best option when:

  • These are sturdy, massive, or highly complex structures (such as heavy equipment and large steel structures).
  • The product or its components (such as gaskets or sensitive electronics) cannot withstand the high oven temperatures required for powder coating.
  • The product is exposed to extremely harsh environmental conditions, such as constant exposure to seawater, chemicals, or soil stress.
  • We want to paint different sides or parts of the object in different colors.

With wet painting, the color options are virtually limitless. We use all the shades from the standard industrial RAL color chart, and we are also able to produce a wide range of custom colors tailored to each customer’s needs. The surface gloss level and finish are also fully adjustable, ranging from a completely matte or flat finish to a high-gloss finish, depending on the product’s intended use.

Wet painting is the only surface treatment method capable of reliably achieving all international corrosion protection classes, ranging from the extreme CX class to the LM1–LM4 classes for immersion exposure. Thanks to multi-layer coating (up to 5 layers), we can combine the specific properties of different paint types, providing the product with superior protection against moisture, salt, chemicals, and mechanical abrasion.

We closely monitor the requirements set forth by occupational safety and environmental legislation (EHS) and adapt our operations accordingly. In our industrial paint shops, we use the most environmentally friendly painting methods possible and state-of-the-art technology to minimize emissions. In addition, all of our painting lines are designed with high energy efficiency in mind, which conserves resources and protects the environment.

The cost of wet painting is influenced by the size and geometry of the part, the required pretreatment (such as blast cleaning or chemical washing), the number of coats to be applied (ranging from a single-coat system to a 5-coat multi-layer system), and the corrosion exposure class required for the product. Thanks to our large capacity and efficient processes, we are able to offer our industrial customers a flexible, comprehensive solution tailored to their needs.
